Beckhoff manufactures the EL6900-0000 safety logic terminal within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. The unit acts as a TwinSAFE controller that monitors distributed I/O modules and exchanges safety data through the Safety over EtherCAT channel. By embedding certified safety logic directly on the DIN rail, it reduces wiring and allows safety functions such as emergency stop, guard door, and light curtain monitoring to be integrated into the general EtherCAT network. The terminal is intended for industrial automation cells where compact safety processing is needed alongside standard control hardware. It supports localized safety logic without requiring a separate external safety controller for each protected section of the machine.

The housing has a width of 12 mm, a depth of 68 mm, and a height of 100 mm, so multiple terminals can line up densely on a 35 mm DIN rail without exceeding typical cabinet depths. The spring-cage supply contacts are rated for 10 A, which allows local forwarding of field power through adjacent I/O blocks. Protection is limited to IP20, which suits installation inside an enclosure, and the device also meets Overvoltage Category II and Protection Class III for low-voltage circuits. A shock resistance of 15 g supports installation on machinery that is exposed to normal vibration. The integrated power feed also helps simplify terminal layout by reducing the need for separate distribution points nearby.

Functionally, the terminal can store up to 255 certified TwinSAFE logic blocks, which allows complex safety sequences to be handled within one compact controller. It supports 128 safe connections so remote EtherCAT slaves, including drives, valves, and light curtains, can exchange FSoE data with deterministic timing. Up to 32 TwinSAFE groups can be created to divide a machine into independent safety zones under the same controller. All data is carried through the TwinSAFE/Safety over EtherCAT protocol, which provides black channel safety without requiring separate fieldbus wiring. This arrangement supports centralized safety management while still allowing individual areas of the machine to be monitored and controlled independently.
