Product Description:
The EL6740-0010 EtherCAT terminal is produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It acts as a master gateway that mounts alongside standard I/O slices, letting an EtherCAT controller exchange cyclic data with devices that reside on another serial fieldbus without installing a separate coupler. By inserting this module into the backplane, a control system can integrate conveyor drives, sensors, or valve islands that were designed for earlier networking standards directly into a modern decentralized control topology.
The terminal links to the Interbus network through a 2 x D-sub, 9-pin bus interface that sits on the front panel. Because the slice uses a remote bus architecture, it can function as the segment head while still drawing its logic supply directly from the E-bus. Current consumption from that backplane is 450 mA typ., so no separate field supply is required. Once configured, the device exchanges up to 32 words in / 32 words out of process data with the controller per cycle, which is sufficient for several slave stations. One channel is provided, and status LEDs give hardware diagnostics for fault indication. Mechanical installation is straightforward because the housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and the assembly is protected to IP20 against finger contact and debris. This arrangement eliminates extra repeater hardware on the rail.
For extended segments, the gateway can reach remote nodes up to 400 m @ 500 kbit/s without repeaters. It can also operate at 2 Mbit / 500 kbaud when shorter cables permit. The terminal exchanges user variables in a fixed WORD (16 bit) format, so mapping of individual bits for status and control follows a predictable structure inside TwinCAT or any EtherCAT master. A polycarbonate enclosure keeps weight low while providing electrical insulation, and its flame-retardant rating supports installation in industrial control cabinets.
