Product Description:
The EL6731-1009 is a communication terminal produced by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It serves as a PROFIBUS master interface that lets an EtherCAT controller operate peripheral drives, sensors, and actuators installed on a PROFIBUS segment. Within an industrial automation system, the terminal bridges two common fieldbus standards, simplifying mixed-vendor I/O architectures and reducing gateway count. It can therefore connect an EtherCAT-based control platform to existing PROFIBUS field devices without requiring a separate external gateway. This makes the terminal useful in retrofit projects where a machine controller must exchange data with installed PROFIBUS nodes that remain in service.
Its single PROFIBUS channel is routed through a galvanically isolated 9-pin D-Sub socket. The terminal operates in Master mode and recognizes the PROFIBUS DP, DP-V1, DP-V2, and MC extensions. Network bandwidth reaches 12 Mbit/s, and the internal scheduler can refresh user data in as little as 200 µs, enabling time-critical positioning or analog regulation loops. The controller may supervise up to 125 slaves, with each device exchanging as much as 244 bytes per slave every cycle. Engineering, address assignment, and baud-rate selection are handled in TwinCAT System Manager. Front-mounted status LEDs provide diagnostics, and the housing fulfills the IP20 protection class for use inside standard control cabinets.
Electrical energy and internal communication are supplied through the EtherCAT backplane, identified as the E-bus. During every scan, the module presents a 1.4 kbyte input + 1.4 kbyte output process image to the PLC, a capacity that accommodates parameter blocks alongside cyclic process data. Mounting follows the 35 mm top-hat rail convention, allowing direct attachment beside other EL terminals without extra hardware. The enclosure can be installed in any orientation, which helps when cabinet space is limited or cable routing must follow unusual paths. Because power and communication arrive through the backplane, no separate supply wiring is needed on the terminal housing itself.
