The EL6021-0000 is a single-channel serial interface terminal manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed alongside other I/O slices, it supplies a physical RS-485/422 port for linking scanners, drives, or operator panels to an EtherCAT network. In industrial automation, it translates serial telegrams into process data words that the controller can process in the same cycle time as its digital and analog channels. This allows serial devices to be integrated directly into a terminal stack without requiring a separate communication gateway.

It supports 1 logical channel that carries separate TxD and RxD lines and can be configured for full-duplex or half-duplex traffic. The electrical layer is RS-485/422, a differential standard that withstands industrial noise and matches the terminal’s minimum receiver sensitivity. Because there is no integrated termination, external 120 Ω resistors must be added, and the module presents an internal characteristic impedance close to 120 Ω for proper line symmetry. Default power-up settings deliver 9600 baud with an 8-N-1 frame, while the baud rate can be raised for faster communication with compatible equipment. Typical consumption from the E-bus backplane is 170 mA, which helps when calculating the current demand of a complete terminal assembly.

The receive FIFO holds 864 bytes, while the transmit buffer offers 128 bytes, allowing the PLC task to decouple from the serial data flow without overruns. A maximum cable length of 1000 m can be reached when shielded twisted pair is used and proper termination is applied, helping preserve signal quality over long runs. The plastic enclosure carries an IP20 protection class, so the terminal is intended for installation in a closed control cabinet. Its compact housing also matches the slim mechanical format used across the EL terminal family, which helps maintain dense I/O layouts on the DIN rail.
