Product Description:

The EL5152-0000 is a dual-channel incremental encoder interface manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed side by side with power and signal slices, it converts differential or single-ended encoder signals into digital position values that the EtherCAT master can process in cycle times down to sub-millisecond ranges. By eliminating separate motion cards, the terminal lets machine builders collect position, velocity, and timing data directly on the DIN rail, reducing cabinet depth and simplifying wiring. The dual-channel layout also allows one terminal to monitor two encoder sources in the same I/O station, which is useful for paired axes or combined reference and feedback signals.

This terminal offers 2 completely independent counting paths, each using a switchable 2 × 16/32-bit counter structure so both channels can be set for 16-bit or 32-bit operation. The hardware accepts edge rates up to 400,000 increments/s, enabling reliable tracking of fast servo axes. For speed measurement, the module works with a granularity of 0.01 Hz, allowing fine closed-loop velocity control even at low shaft speeds. Position interpolation is handled internally in steps of 1/256-bit microincrements, which smooth motion profiles when the master interpolates between coarse encoder counts. That combination supports accurate feedback from slowly rotating shafts as well as rapid position updates from higher-speed motion. Distributed-clock support aligns its internal timestamping with the EtherCAT network so captured values remain phase-synchronous with drive commands. The housing measures 12 mm in width, 68 mm in depth, and 100 mm in height, which keeps the module compact in high-density control panels.

The period measurement channel resolves time intervals with 100 ns precision, which is useful for diagnosing jitter on high-frequency encoder streams. A quadrature decoder with 4-fold evaluation multiplies incoming edge information so full motor revolutions are measured without missing counts. Communication over the E-bus draws only 130 mA, minimizing load on the upstream coupler's power budget, while the encoder supply pin delivers a steady 24 V DC to the A1, B1, A2, and B2 lines through the integrated spring terminals. The integrated spring terminals keep field wiring direct at the terminal block and avoid the need for separate adapter hardware to distribute encoder supply voltage.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The EL5152-0000 is a Beckhoff EtherCAT terminal for encoder signal acquisition with 2 channels and 24 V DC encoder voltage. Distributed clocks support and 100 ns period resolution give the terminal very precise timing behavior in synchronized control tasks. A 400,000 increments/s limit frequency makes the unit an excellent choice for fast, accurate feedback processing.’’
