The EL5151-0000 is a single-channel counter and quadrature decoder terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Mounted on a DIN rail beside other I/O slices, it links incremental encoders or fast sensors to an EtherCAT network so that PLCs can obtain position, velocity, or event totals without external standalone electronics. Through the series' standardized E-bus, the unit shares both power and time-synchronized data, allowing deterministic motion or process control functions inside distributed automation architectures.

The terminal operates from a field supply of 24 V DC and draws 130 mA from the EtherCAT E-bus. Its counter can be switched between 32/16-bit binary widths, giving headroom for both slow and fast edge rates. With a limit frequency of 100 kHz, the slice tracks rapid encoder transitions, and the quadrature logic performs a fourfold evaluation so each electrical cycle is divided into four states. For fine positioning, hardware interpolation down to 1/256-bit microincrements gives controllers sub-pulse resolution without oversampling. The channel also includes a latch or gate input that can freeze the count on an edge for synchronized diagnostics.

Synchronization accuracy is enhanced by the EtherCAT Distributed Clocks feature; the EL5151 stamps each captured value with 1 ns granularity and holds a typical absolute accuracy of 100 ns against the network reference. These deterministic timestamps allow multi-axis or multi-sensor data correlation without extra hardware. Power contacts routed through the terminal pass up to 10 A, so downstream modules receive field power without separate wiring. A compact 12 × 100 × 68 mm housing and an enclosure rating of IP20 suit protected control cabinets where convection cooling and tool-free wiring are preferred. Diagnostic LEDs on the front show operating status, counting direction, and latch activity for quick status checks.
