Product Description:

The EL5101-0010 incremental encoder interface is manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. This terminal accepts differential encoder signals and converts them into digital position counts that can be time-stamped by an EtherCAT master. In automated machinery, it is used to record shaft position, linear travel, or conveyor speed so that the controller can close motion loops, verify lengths, or trigger synchronized downstream events. Its compact terminal format also lets the feedback point be placed directly within a modular I/O station beside other EtherCAT terminals.

The module provides one input channel, and its counter width can be switched between 16/32-bit resolution to match the required measuring range. Signal transmission uses Differential RS422, and a 4-fold quadrature decoder multiplies incoming edge information for finer positional granularity. A limit frequency of 5 MHz permits fast pulse trains from high-speed encoders, while a minimum internal cycle time of 100 µs lets Distributed Clocks align the captured value with other EtherCAT data during each control cycle. Electrical separation between the field side and the logic side is rated at 500 V to help prevent ground loops and protect the backplane. Gate and latch functions use a 24 V DC reference so that machine sensors can freeze or reset the counter without extra relay wiring.

Both the encoder supply and the status inputs share a power rail of 5 V DC, delivering reference voltage directly to TTL-compatible transducers. The nominal bus supply and the gate and latch control each operate from 24 V DC, reducing component variety inside the cabinet and matching common industrial control power. The housing is classified as IP20, indicating finger-safe openings and use inside a shielded control enclosure. Up to 0.5 A of sensor output current is available, so external load on the 5 V line remains within limits. This arrangement supports direct connection of compatible encoder hardware without requiring a separate signal-conditioning module.
