The Beckhoff EL5032 is a high accuracy dual channel encoder interface terminal suitable for some precise position detection in industrial automation systems. The EL5032 is EL EtherCAT Terminals series whose encoder attachment supports encoders using RS422 signal pairs (D+, D degrees C^', C+, C degrees C^') to provide resolution up to 48 bits, which is extremely accurate to achieve complex motion applications.

Supplying power to the EL5032 through power contacts from a 24 V DC power supply enables the EL5032 to provide flexible encoder voltage support (5 V DC or 9 V DC) for a maximum current output of 0.5 ampere, internally taken from the 24 V supply. Because there is no need for extra power circuitry, it can be integrated with a wide range of encoder types. Distributed clock functionality is incorporated in the module for synchronization of the position data at all the different terminals in the EtherCAT system. The deterministic control needed in motion control, robotics, and CNC applications is possible due to this real time clock coordination.

In addition to position acquisition, the EL5032 contains further diagnostics and smart features: zero offset shift storage, electronic type plate, up to 100 meters cable length compensation, temperature measurement and speed calculation. The module also supports reading and writing of parameters, reset functions, and the reading of additional encoder information via the MRS code. The terminal is compact and lightweight weighing only 50g, and operates within an ambient temperature range 0 degrees CE" 55C, and can be stored at temperature extremes of degrees C^'25C to +85C making it suitable for use in industrial environments.
