Product Description:
The EL5001-0000 is a single-channel EtherCAT encoder interface terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It occupies 12 mm of DIN-rail width and forms part of distributed I/O where it captures position data from SSI transducers and supplies it to a controller via the EtherCAT fieldbus. In automated machinery the terminal serves as a compact bridge between an external absolute encoder and a high-speed motion task, allowing synchronous acquisition under distributed-clock timing.
It handles a channel count of 1, dedicating all internal resources to a single sensor and mapping one 32-bit position word plus an 8-bit status byte to the controller. An SSI stream up to 1 MHz is accepted, and telegram length can be configured up to 32 bits; shorter words are right-aligned automatically. The encoder supply is regulated at 24 V DC, and the differential lines conform to RS-422 signaling. The coding selector supports Binary code or Gray code, letting the terminal match the encoder format. The data path is read-only, and hardware distributed clocks maintain sub-microsecond synchronization across the network.
Its spring-cage housing measures 12 mm × 100 mm × 68 mm, fits standard terminal strips, and maintains a IP20 protection class against tool-sized objects. The power contacts can distribute up to 10 A, so neighboring terminals receive field power without separate wiring. Both signal input and output use RS422 differential pairs routed to D+, D-, Cl+, and Cl- terminals, ensuring noise-immune transmission over shielded lines. Interface selection remains SSI, and the terminal simply relays the encoder telegram; no local scaling is performed. This arrangement passes the encoder telegram directly to the controller, which can process the position values without terminal-side conversion.
