Product Description:

The EL5001 is an EtherCat terminal that is designed by Beckhoff for automation applications. Its function is to connect sensors, actuators or other field devices such as encoders to an EtherCAT network.

The EL5001 EtherCat Terminal is tested to withstand mechanical vibrations and shocks as it conforms to EN 60068-2-6 and EN 60068-2-27 standards. It functions very well in humid environments up to 95% humidity, as long as no condensation forms. It is powered directly through 24 V DC power contacts which simplifies integration into power buses or DIN rail systems. It connects to SSI encoders using differential signal pairs for data (D+, D-) and clock (Cl+, Cl-). The module draws approximately 20 mA from the power supply for its own operation plus any additional current needed by the connected encoder. It is designed as pluggable which supports easy connection and disconnection. Its communication speed with the encoder is adjustable up to 1 MHz, with 250 kHz as the factory default which allows optimization for long cables or high speed needs. It is certified for use in potentially explosive gas atmospheres (Zone 2) which ensures safety in hazardous areas. The terminal has an encoder which is powered with 24 volts DC that is supplied directly by its power contacts.

The EL Terminals series module supports EtherCAT's distributed clocks system which ensures synchronized operation down to nanosecond accuracy. Its clock signal is sent to the encoder through RS422 differential signaling which reduces noise and increases signal integrity. It is specifically designed to interface with SSI (Synchronous Serial Interface) encoders which is commonly used in precise position sensing. The module only reads data from the encoder and it doesn't send data back except for the clock signal.
