The EL4124 is a four-channel analog current output module manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed on a DIN rail alongside other EtherCAT nodes, it accepts process data from the controller over the high-speed fieldbus and converts that data into precise current loops for actuators, positioners, or transducers used in industrial automation. Its single-ended ground reference and support for distributed-clock synchronization help keep each channel phase-aligned with the rest of the machine network, which is useful when several analog devices must respond in a coordinated way during tightly timed machine cycles.

The terminal supplies its internal logic through the E-Bus, while the 0 V terminal can sink up to 500 mA to support sensor power returns. Each output channel is rated for loads below 350 Ω, so the module can maintain stable loop operation without excessive voltage drop at the terminals. With distributed clocks disabled, the conversion circuitry reaches a throughput of 4 kSps, allowing rapid setpoint updates during fast control sequences. Current per channel is adjustable across the industrial span of 4 mA to 20 mA, and all four outputs update simultaneously. Power for the output stage is taken from an adjacent 24 V supply terminal, while the electronics section remains isolated on the backplane.

When distributed clocks are active, the sampling bandwidth is limited to 2.5 kSps, which supports deterministic timing across synchronized terminals. Output drivers draw energy from a separate field supply of 24 VDC, helping prevent load transients from disturbing backplane signaling. Each channel converts its digital word with 16 bits of resolution, and the process image occupies four 16-bit words in the PLC memory map. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, so the module is intended for use inside a controlled cabinet. Front-mounted spring terminals allow direct wiring without special tools, which helps keep installation compact and orderly on dense terminal assemblies.
