The EL4012 analog output terminal is produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. As a peripheral module for EtherCAT I/O stations, it converts digital command values from the controller into analog current signals for actuators, drives, valves, or signal conditioners on the machine. The terminal occupies a single 12 mm position on a standard DIN rail, allowing another output function to be added without requiring a separate enclosure. Its compact format also lets it connect directly to adjacent EtherCAT terminals through the station bus, reducing the amount of wiring needed between the controller and field devices.
The module provides 2 analog outputs, with both channels operating through a multiplexed sampling circuit that allows them to share one digital-to-analog converter. A 12-bit resolution provides 4,096 discrete output steps across the available range, supporting gradual adjustments to connected equipment. Field power is routed through the internal terminal bus, while the output stage receives power from the station’s 24 VDC supply. Each output channel supports loads of less than 500 Ω to keep current within the calibrated operating range. Loads must remain below this limit during operation so that the terminal can generate the commanded signal without exceeding the channel capacity. The shared converter architecture minimizes internal component requirements while maintaining separate output channels for independent control commands.
The housing provides IP20 protection when the terminal is correctly installed in a control cabinet on a 35 mm mounting rail. This enclosure helps prevent accidental finger contact with internal circuitry and limits the entry of larger solid objects. EtherCAT cycle timing supports a sync accuracy of under 100 ns, allowing output updates to remain closely aligned with other devices in the network. Integrated Distributed Clocks synchronize the output channels through the E-bus, which supports coordinated motion and time-sensitive process control. Output accuracy across the operating temperature range is maintained with a full-scale error of ±0.1%. Built-in short-circuit protection protects the output circuitry if a connected load or wiring fault causes excessive current on a channel.
