Product Description:

The EL3423 is a power-measurement terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed alongside digital and analog I/O on a single EtherCAT string, the module captures electrical parameters on three-phase machinery so a controller can monitor energy use and detect supply abnormalities in real time. It occupies one terminal slot and communicates process data over the system E-bus without requiring a separate fieldbus coupler, making it a compact sensing component for distributed automation cabinets.

The terminal offers 3 current and 3 voltage channels, so each phase conductor and its corresponding potential can be measured individually. Internal conversion hardware delivers a 24-bit word for every sample, providing fine resolution when trending power factor or harmonics. Voltage measurement is permitted up to 480 V AC 3~, enabling direct connection to common industrial power systems without external transformers, while current is accepted up to 1 A (AC/DC) through the built-in shunts. Values are calculated with a True RMS algorithm, allowing the controller to obtain accurate active and reactive power even when the waveform is distorted by drives or other nonlinear loads.

The housing measures 12 × 100 × 68 mm and snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, conserving space in densely populated enclosures. Power contacts are rated for 10 A, so the terminal can back-feed its E-bus neighbors without overheating the copper tracks. An ingress protection rating of IP20 limits the unit to clean control cabinets but simplifies heat dissipation because no external sealing is necessary. Samples from all six channels are taken simultaneously, and the conversion cycle follows a line-synchronous update scheme to avoid aliasing against the fundamental frequency. Typical bus demand is 120 mA, and the single-ended ground reference allows straightforward wiring when plant earth is bonded to the neutral bar. A combined voltage-and-current measurement error of 0.5% of full scale keeps long-term energy logs within accepted auditing tolerances.
