Beckhoff's EL3314-0090 is an analog input member of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series that acquires low-level sensor signals for distributed control systems. It works in a dedicated mV measurement mode, and a Type K thermocouple profile is preset so temperature data can be accepted without additional scaling. Field wiring follows a 2-wire scheme, while power for the electronics is derived directly from the E-bus backplane, reducing external supply lines. These features make the terminal suitable for compact automation nodes that must forward temperature or millivolt feedback to a central controller.

The electrical measuring window spans ±75 mV, giving adequate headroom for most thermocouple voltages, and this span is digitized by an internal 16-bit converter to preserve small changes in process temperature. A configurable filter with a cutoff at 1 kHz suppresses higher-frequency noise before conversion. Module power draw remains at 200 mA from the backplane, allowing dense I/O banks without overloading the supply. Four differential channels are available, identified as 4 inputs, and each channel is galvanically separated from the bus by 500 V of isolation to guard the CPU against field transients. Open-circuit recognition is implemented so broken sensor leads trigger a fault bit, and the terminal carries TwinSAFE functional certification for integration into safety architectures.

Installation distance to the sensing element can reach 30 m when shielded cabling is used, giving layout flexibility on large machines. After conversion, raw data occupies a compact 16 bytes within the input process image. Command and status bits consume 8 bytes on the output side, which helps streamline cyclic traffic over EtherCAT. These memory footprints, combined with the module's safety flagging and autonomous fault detection, let the controller concentrate on higher-level logic instead of basic signal validation.
