Product Description:

The EL3214 is an analog input terminal manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Intended for distributed temperature acquisition, it accepts resistance sensors and converts their signals into EtherCAT process data that the controller can read in real time. Placing conversion circuitry directly on the I/O rail streamlines cabinet layouts and reduces external signal-conditioning hardware in industrial automation cells. This arrangement is useful on machines with several temperature zones, where keeping signal conversion close to the terminal strip helps reduce extra interposing hardware and shortens the path between field wiring and control data. The terminal communicates exclusively via the EtherCAT backplane and requires no separate fieldbus coupler.

Internally, the module employs a Delta-Sigma converter that samples each channel in a multiplex sequence, achieving a 16-bit digital word for every reading. The default scaling provides 0.1 °C per digit, giving fine temperature granularity across the supported Pt100, Pt200, Pt500, Pt1000, Ni100, Ni120, Ni1000, KT, and KTY elements. Four separate inputs are available, and each can be wired with 2- or 3-wire compensation via the spring-loaded connection method. Continuous measured-value filtering is handled by predefined digital filters that smooth noise introduced by field cabling. The electronics draw logic power through the E-bus, while protection against accidental touch is maintained with an IP20 housing rating.

For installation, the terminal snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail and occupies only 12 x 100 x 68 mm of panel space, permitting high-density mounting next to other I/O slices. Its power contacts are rated for 10 A, allowing a generous common supply to be routed through adjacent terminals without extra feed modules. The integrated sensor excitation is provided as continuous current, so the connected RTDs remain energized at all times for fast, stable acquisition after bus cycles. The narrow housing also helps keep adjacent terminal rows compact while leaving sensor wiring accessible at the front of the assembly.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The Beckhoff EL3214 is an EtherCAT terminal for temperature measurement, with 4 inputs and 16-bit resolution. Delta-Sigma conversion and predefined internal digital filters give measurement quality a notably stable, low-noise character. Support for Pt100 through KTY sensors and 2- or 3-wire wiring makes the terminal a flexible choice for precise thermal monitoring.’’
