Product Description:
The EL3202 is an analog input terminal from Beckhoff’s EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for resistance temperature detectors, it converts sensor resistance into normalized digital temperature values and passes them to an EtherCAT controller. The module allows distributed temperature acquisition close to the process, reducing wiring and simplifying diagnostics in industrial automation systems. Because it shares the same mechanical format as other EL family slices, multiple I/O functions can be combined in one compact rack.
Each of the two input channels is digitized by a Delta-Sigma converter, and the module cycles between them through Multiplex sampling. The Delta-Sigma topology oversamples the sensor signal and applies digital filtering, raising noise immunity at low signal levels. This architecture yields a resolution of 0.1 °C per digit, which is reported to the controller as a 2 × 32-bit RTD input value in the process image. Supported curves include Pt100/Pt200/Pt500/Pt1000/Ni100/Ni120/Ni1000, and wiring can be executed in 2-wire or 3-wire configurations so lead-resistance compensation can be selected to suit the installation.
For installation, the terminal clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail and occupies only 12 × 100 × 68 mm. Logic power and bus communication are fed through the E-bus, while the independent power contacts can carry up to 10 A for neighboring terminals on the same rail. The measurement circuit is single-ended with respect to ground, and the RTDs receive a continuous-current excitation so low resistance changes remain linear. Continuous-current excitation keeps the sensor element at a predictable dissipation level, avoiding self-heating errors that would exceed the module’s measurement step size. An IP20 housing guards the electronics from accidental finger contact and dust within enclosed control cabinets.
