Product Description:

The EL3164 is a voltage-measuring analog input terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for DIN-rail assemblies, the unit converts field-level sensor voltages into digital process data that an EtherCAT controller can read in real time. By providing four simultaneously sampled channels, the terminal permits synchronized acquisition of machine parameters, making it useful in closed-loop control or data-logging tasks across industrial automation lines.

Each of the 4 analog inputs accepts single-ended voltage signals and is digitized with 16-bit resolution, delivering 65,536 discrete levels for fine amplitude discrimination. The conversion path incorporates simultaneous sampling so all channels share a common time base, and support for distributed clocks keeps timestamp alignment consistent across multiple EtherCAT nodes. A front-end filter caps bandwidth at a 5 kHz filter limit, which helps reduce high-frequency noise before conversion. Total transfer accuracy stays within ±0.3% full-scale measuring error. The terminal publishes its data as a process image of 4 × 16-bit input words plus 4 × 8-bit status words, simplifying PLC mapping. Internal electronics draw 130 mA from the E-Bus supply, so no separate field power is required.

Electrical isolation between the system and I/O has a 30 V dielectric strength, while the housing carries an IP20 rating for protected cabinet use. Installation on a 35 mm mounting rail secures the terminal mechanically and ensures proper engagement with adjacent EtherCAT modules. Each channel can source up to 40 mA of input contact current, allowing direct wiring of low-impedance sensors without auxiliary buffering. The single-ended ground reference minimizes wiring effort, and the voltage signal type matches common ±10 V transducers for use in motion, process, and test-bench applications.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The EL3164 is a Beckhoff EtherCAT analog input terminal for voltage signals with 4 analog inputs. Simultaneous sampling and 16-bit resolution give this terminal very clean acquisition behavior in synchronized control and monitoring tasks. A measuring error of just ±0.3% FS makes the EL3164 a strong choice for precise panel-level signal capture.’’
