Product Description:

The EL3154-0017 analog input terminal is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It functions as a modular sensor interface for industrial control systems, converting field-level voltage signals into digital words that are transmitted over the EtherCAT backplane. By inserting the terminal next to CPU, relay, and motion modules, the control system can gain additional measurement capability without external marshalling. Its role is to deliver time-synchronized process values to the PLC so that machine sequences react accurately to changing analog conditions.

The card handles 4 voltage channels that are sampled sequentially by a multiplex converter structure. Each channel is digitized with a resolution of 16 bit, giving 65,536 discrete steps across the input span for fine granularity in closed-loop algorithms. An internal low-pass stage imposes a cutoff at 5 kHz to attenuate high-frequency noise before conversion. Sensor circuits see an input impedance of 85 Ω plus the diode drop, so scaling resistors must be sized accordingly. Communication and logic power are drawn from the E-bus, where the terminal draws a typical current of 130 mA. Distributed clocks are supported, allowing sub-microsecond synchronization, and the channels share a single-ended ground reference. Supply voltage is provided exclusively via the E-bus.

For cabinet integration, the housing mounts onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and its pins can source or sink up to 40 mA without damage. The terminal provides a dielectric separation of 30 V between the input circuitry and the bus, and the enclosure meets the IP20 protection class suitable for shielded electrical rooms. The runtime image delivered to the controller consists of 4 x 16 bit + 4 x 8 bit words, aligning status flags beside each measured value. This structure is refreshed during each EtherCAT cycle by the multiplex sampling engine.
