The EL3151 is an analog input terminal manufactured by Beckhoff and supplied in the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It links field-level transducers to an EtherCAT network. The terminal converts a single-ended process signal into digital words that a controller can process in real time for monitoring, regulation, or data acquisition tasks in automated equipment. This conversion allows the controller to evaluate analog sensor values through the same EtherCAT communication system used by other connected terminals.

The module samples its single channel with a resolution of 16 bit, so each conversion delivers 65,536 discrete levels for fine amplitude discrimination. A built-in filter passes signal content up to 5 kHz, limiting high-frequency noise before digitization. Sensor circuits may draw up to 40 mA from the input pin, and the galvanic spacing withstands field potentials of 30 V without breakdown. EtherCAT Distributed Clocks are supported, and the internal timing error remains below 1 µs, which keeps data from adjacent terminals phase-aligned. The channel operates simultaneously rather than sequentially, helping the terminal capture its measurement at the assigned EtherCAT cycle time. The process image exposes one 16-bit measurement word and an eight-bit status byte that reports overrange or error conditions. These separate data fields allow the controller to read the measured value while also checking the condition of the channel.

The housing carries an IP20 rating, so it is intended for installation inside a control cabinet that shields the electronics from accidental contact and solid foreign objects. Mechanical attachment uses a 35 mm DIN rail, and the housing can be mounted in any orientation because its installation position is variable. Input referencing is single-ended, meaning the signal shares a common ground with the terminal’s internal circuitry. Operating power for the conversion logic arrives exclusively through the EtherCAT E-bus, eliminating separate power wiring for that circuitry. The module provides one analog input in a compact terminal housing, making it suitable for installations that require an individual sensor channel without adding a larger multichannel input module. Its distributed-clock support also allows the recorded value to be coordinated with measurements from other EtherCAT devices in the same control system.
