Product Description:

The EL3121 is an analog input terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. The unit captures low-level voltage signals from sensors and translates them into controller-readable values, thereby integrating measurement functions directly on the EtherCAT network. Designed for machine automation, it occupies only one slot on a 35 mm DIN rail and draws its logic supply from the internal E-bus, so no separate wiring is required for electronics power. This combination of compact packaging and networked acquisition streamlines distributed I/O installation on production equipment.

The terminal provides 1 differential input channel that accepts voltages up to a common-mode level of 10 V. An internal low-pass stage limits signal bandwidth to 5 kHz, reducing high-frequency noise before conversion. The front end draws up to 40 mA from the sensor circuit, and the measurement path has an input resistance of 85 Ω, which must be considered when driving high-impedance sources. Differential referencing suppresses ground loops, and the EtherCAT distributed-clocks feature lets the terminal time-stamp incoming samples so that multiple nodes remain phase-aligned across the network. Operating voltage for the electronics is supplied through the E-bus backplane, which simplifies cabinet wiring.

The housing snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail and carries an IP20 protection rating that suits closed control enclosures. Each acquired sample is converted with 16-bit resolution and is placed in the process image as a 1 × 16-bit data word with an accompanying 1 × 8-bit status byte for diagnostics. Because conversion is simultaneous, time-critical channels in a system can be captured without inter-sample skew. The terminal can divert up to 100 mA of shield current to ground, limiting interference on incoming lines, and it exposes its process image cyclically through standard EtherCAT mapping.
