The EL3054 analog input terminal is produced by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for distributed I/O architectures, the unit converts single-ended process voltages into network data that a controller reads in the same cycle as other EtherCAT telegrams. By housing four channels in a 12 mm slice, it gathers pressure, flow, or position feedback close to the machine while eliminating long analog cable runs and separate signal conditioners.

The terminal offers 4 analog inputs that are scanned through multiplex sampling. Each channel is digitized with 12-bit resolution and extended to a 16-bit presentation width, so the PLC receives sign-consistent words. Every transfer includes 2 bytes of status followed by 2 bytes of value, enabling on-frame diagnostics. A 1 kHz input filter suppresses high-frequency noise before conversion. Signals share a single-ended ground that references the 0 V power contact, and timing remains synchronous with the EtherCAT E-Bus, which also supplies the internal electronics. When sensors require excitation, a dedicated 24 V sensor supply contact is available. The channel group therefore supports loop-powered or passive transducers without auxiliary terminals.

Each input has a dielectric strength of 30 V, while the total input current is limited to 40 mA. The power contacts are rated for up to 1 A, which is sufficient for low-current sensor loops that return through the module. The housing has an IP20 protection rating and operates at up to 95% relative humidity without condensation. Because the design references all measurements to the internal 0 V rail, a low-impedance return path must be maintained to avoid offset errors. Status bytes indicate overrange or open-circuit conditions. The 24 V feed line provides a stable source for resistive dividers or potentiometric pickups during operation.
