Product Description:
The EL3048 is an eight-channel analog input module manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. In a machine or process line, it samples sensor voltages and forwards the numerical results to the PLC over the EtherCAT E-bus, eliminating separate signal cables and reducing cabinet wiring. The terminal fits beside other I/O blocks on a standard DIN rail and draws its logic power from the internal bus, making it a compact element for scalable automation nodes. Its analog front end is referenced to a single common ground, so conventional two-wire transmitters can be connected without differential wiring.
Each of the 8 single-ended channels is digitized by a 12-bit converter, and the controller receives each result as a 16-bit value that preserves sign and status information. The multiplexed architecture scans one channel after another and completes a full cycle in 1.25 ms, allowing rapidly varying signals to be captured within typical control loops. The input stage withstands up to 30 V between the signal line and logic ground, providing basic protection against wiring errors. Operating power for the measurement circuitry comes directly from the E-bus, and the module draws 130 mA during normal operation. Field devices connected to the inputs may supply up to 40 mA per point, keeping heat dissipation within safe limits.
Signal fidelity is further improved by an anti-aliasing filter with a cutoff frequency of 1 kHz, which attenuates higher-frequency noise before conversion. A per-channel source impedance of 85 Ω limits surge currents and helps maintain accuracy when long sensor leads are present. The housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, allowing it to be installed alongside compatible EtherCAT terminals. Its open housing has an IP20 protection rating, providing finger-safe access but no protection against moisture. The terminal represents each channel in the process image with two status bytes and two value bytes. The shared ground reference also simplifies common-mode analysis during system setup.
