The EL3021 analog input terminal is produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for distributed I/O stations, the unit offers a single differential voltage channel that routes field-level signals directly into an EtherCAT network. It is used to read sensor outputs such as pressure, position, or temperature transmitters that deliver ±10 V levels. By embedding conversion electronics on the terminal strip, the module shortens analog wiring runs, lowers susceptibility to noise, and allows the PLC to process measured data in real time.
Its resolution is 12 bits, providing 4,096 discrete steps across the input span for moderate measurement granularity in machine control tasks. Each conversion cycle takes 0.625 ms, so the controller receives fresh data at a rate of 1.6 kHz, which is suitable for closed-loop regulation of fast pneumatic actuators. Total system accuracy has a maximum error of ±0.3% FSV, which keeps scaling deviations small when the terminal is calibrated. An analog anti-aliasing network attenuates high-frequency components, and its -3 dB point is 1 kHz, balancing noise rejection with signal fidelity. The differential front end tolerates a common-mode potential of up to 10 V, allowing sensors to share a noisy ground without saturating the analog-to-digital converter.
The terminal draws 130 mA from the E-bus, which must be considered when populating dense terminal stacks. Its input screw can carry up to 40 mA, accommodating most active voltage transmitters while preventing an overload of the internal 85 Ω impedance path and protection diode. The housing has an IP20 rating, so the terminal must be installed in a closed control cabinet that provides appropriate protection. Sampling across the single channel is simultaneous, so the reported value remains coherent with the 2-byte process-image word. An additional 2-byte status segment conveys diagnostic flags such as open-circuit detection. A shield contact rated for 100 mA is included to provide consistent ground referencing.
