Beckhoff produces the EL EtherCAT Terminals series, and the EL2912-2200 is a member of that line. This module is a digital output safety terminal for control circuits, intended to switch actuators in decentralized cabinets through the EtherCAT fieldbus. It is suited for applications where safe output switching must be coordinated with networked machine control. By combining the signal layer and the communication backbone in a narrow housing, it simplifies distributed I/O architecture and reduces wiring inside machines that rely on PLC-driven automation sequences.

The terminal is powered from the field supply at 24 V DC, and each of its two output channels can deliver up to 2 A to solenoids or relays. Its slim housing measures 12 mm × 100 mm × 68 mm, conserving DIN-rail space while still leaving room for spring terminals that accept conductors down to 0.75 mm². The housing has an IP20 protection rating, and the internal circuitry withstands a dielectric test of 500 V DC between the E-bus domain and the field level. The design does not include channel isolation, yet it keeps E-bus isolation active so backplane communication remains disturbance-free. This arrangement separates field-side switching from terminal-bus communication while preserving stable data exchange with the controller. There is no integrated safety controller, so safety functions must be handled by an upstream logic controller.

The four-segment status bar uses 4 LEDs to indicate channel state, diagnostics, and E-bus power, making status checks easier during operation. Clear visual indication helps confirm output activity and bus status at a glance without adding external indicators. The terminal can be located up to 100 m from the head controller over shielded EtherCAT wiring, which supports flexible placement in distributed machine layouts. Beckhoff recommends mounting the device inside an enclosure that at least meets IP54 so the front terminals remain protected from dust or dripping moisture when the cabinet door is open.
