The EL2912 is a safety output terminal in the EL EtherCAT Terminals series produced by Beckhoff. Within an EtherCAT I/O rack, it provides two switchable channels that disconnect external loads whenever a fault is detected. This function allows the terminal to form part of a machine’s emergency-stop or protective-interlock circuitry. The terminal is intended for industrial automation systems that use distributed I/O over the EtherCAT fieldbus and require certified functional safety at the I/O layer. Its compact terminal format also allows the safety channels to be installed alongside standard EtherCAT terminals in a control cabinet.
The outputs operate on a nominal supply of 24 V DC, and each channel can source or sink up to 2 A. This capacity allows direct actuation of compatible contactors, solenoids, and indicator lamps without auxiliary relays. Connection uses a single-conductor scheme identified as 1-wire, which simplifies field wiring by reducing the number of conductors required at each connection point. The internal switching elements support resistive, inductive, and lamp loads, allowing the terminal to control heaters, coils, and filament lamps within the stated current limit. The module satisfies performance level PL e under ISO 13849-1 when it is integrated with the required diagnostics and fault exclusions. The safety controller can monitor the channels through the EtherCAT system and command them according to the configured protective logic.
The housing meets protection class IP20, so the terminal must be installed inside a suitable control cabinet. This protection level guards against contact with hazardous internal parts and ingress by larger solid objects, but it does not protect the unit against water. The module uses two fail-safe switching transistors to provide individual safe outputs that can shut off simultaneously or independently according to the configured safety logic. The circuitry is certified to SIL 3 according to IEC 61508, supporting applications that require a low probability of dangerous failure during continuous operation. Proper cabinet placement, wiring, and safety logic are necessary to preserve the intended protective behavior of the output channels.
