Product Description:
The EL2911-0000 is a safety I/O terminal manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for machine and cell-level automation, the unit links safety-related sensors and actuators to an EtherCAT network so emergency stops, light curtains, and guard switches can be processed inside the PLC safety task. By combining safe inputs and a solid-state output in a 24 mm wide housing, the terminal adds functional safety to a standard terminal strand without expanding the control cabinet footprint.
For communication the terminal uses the TwinSAFE/Safety over EtherCAT protocol, which embeds safety data inside ordinary EtherCAT frames without extra wiring. All electronics are powered from a single 24 V DC supply that also feeds the field contacts. The module offers 4 safe inputs for OSSD or dry-contact devices and 1 safe output rated for high-side switching of external contactors or valves. Each bus cycle transfers a six-byte input image and an identical six-byte output image, giving deterministic status and command exchange. Mechanical attachment is by way of a 35 mm DIN rail, and the internal E-bus passes power and backplane data to adjacent terminals without manual jumpering.
The enclosure carries a IP20 protection rating, so it must be installed inside a protective cabinet. Compact overall dimensions of 24 x 100 x 68 mm simplify dense mounting, yet the power stage can deliver up to 10 A to downstream loads. A 12 mA clock output current supports test pulses required by some safety devices. An internal barrier provides E-bus isolation, while channel isolation is omitted to keep the form factor small, meaning all inputs share the same reference potential. Dielectric strength is proven with a 500 VDC insulation test, and Beckhoff specifies horizontal mounting to maintain proper convection around the housing.
