The EL2809-0015 digital output module is manufactured by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It interfaces discrete actuators such as relays, lamps, and small valves with an EtherCAT controller, turning network telegrams into electrical switching signals for machine sequences. Mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail, the terminal slides into adjoining slices to build compact, scalable I/O stations inside the control cabinet. This arrangement lets the module serve as a dense output point where multiple field devices must be switched from a single terminal assembly.

It provides 16 individually driven outputs, and each channel appears in the process image as a single bit for straightforward PLC mapping. The nominal switching level of 24 VDC aligns with standard control voltages, while up to 0.35 A per channel permits direct operation of light ohmic or inductive loads without external amplifiers. All channels together may source a maximum of 4.5 A, so current planning must consider simultaneous energizing across the terminal. Electrical separation from logic circuits is provided by a 500 V isolation barrier between the field side and the internal E-bus, which helps limit fault transfer into the control electronics. During operation, the terminal draws about 140 mA from the E-bus and transmits diagnostic status for each output, allowing the controller to monitor switching activity and detect channel-level changes during machine operation.

Signal wiring follows the 1-Wire push-in technique, so every output shares a common supply conductor that reduces terminal density and simplifies field cabling. The housing carries an IP20 rating, which means the module is finger-safe but intended for installation inside a protected enclosure. Fast edge performance is achieved with a turn-on delay of 10 µs and a turn-off delay of 25 µs, supporting high-frequency duty cycles required by stepper brakes or pulse-driven valves. Because the circuitry is not short-circuit proof, external fusing is recommended where wiring faults or inductive kickback may occur. The module supports both ohmic and inductive load types, and it reports output states through a 16-bit process image for clear status handling in the control system.
