Product Description:
The EL2798 is an EtherCAT Terminal that provides eight solid-state relay outputs for AC and DC voltages. Beckhoff manufactures the EL terminal uses high-performance MOSFET transistors that allow for reliable switching of both ohmic and slightly inductive loads. The terminal is housed in a polycarbonate enclosure and is intended for mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail.
The EL2798 EtherCAT terminal features eight potential-free make contacts that substitute traditional relay contacts and support switching up to 30 V AC/DC for ohmic and slightly inductive loads, and up to 48 V DC for purely ohmic loads. The maximum output current is 2 A per channel, with a total output current of 10 A. The on-resistance is typically 0.03 Ω, and the breakdown voltage is 80 V. The terminal is not short-circuit-proof but can handle peak currents up to 5 A for 100 ms, allowing it to manage high inrush currents until an external fuse responds. Electrical isolation of 500 V is provided between the E-bus and field potential, and channel-to-channel isolation is less than 200 V. The typical current consumption from the E-bus is 140 mA. The terminal operates in ambient temperatures from 0°C to +55°C and supports relative humidity up to 95% non-condensing.
The EL2798 EtherCAT terminal supports a stripping length of 8–9 mm and accommodates various conductor types, including solid and stranded wires as well as ferrules. The terminal is designed for flexible installation positions and features high-density housing with signal LEDs for status indication. The terminal is protected to IP20 and meets EMC immunity and emission standards EN 61000-6-2 and EN 61000-6-4. The installation is simplified by direct plug-in for solid conductors and spring actuation for stranded wires.
Frequently Asked Questions about EL2798:
Q: Why does EL2798 have 8 output channels?
A: The terminal offers eight output channels that allow flexible control of multiple loads in one compact terminal. This design increases system integration efficiency.
Q: Does EL2798 support both AC and DC switching?
A: Yes, the terminal supports switching of both AC and DC voltages up to 30 V, and up to 48 V DC for ohmic loads.
Q: Why is the EL2798 not short-circuit-proof?
A: The terminal uses MOSFETs that can handle high peak currents briefly but rely on external fuses for short-circuit protection. This approach maintains compactness and flexibility.
Q: How does EL2798 achieve electrical isolation?
A: The terminal provides 500 V isolation between the E-bus and field potential, and less than 200 V channel-to-channel, ensuring safe operation and signal integrity.
Q: Why is polycarbonate used for EL2798 housing?
A: Polycarbonate provides mechanical strength and electrical insulation for the terminal, ensuring durability and safety during operation and installation.
