The EL2521-0025 is a single-channel frequency output module manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed alongside standard I/O slices, the terminal converts EtherCAT process data into a pulse train so motion axes, counters, or process sensors can be driven directly from the fieldbus controller. Two independent input channels accept position or trigger feedback, while the dedicated output channel delivers a configurable square-wave signal for position or speed control tasks in industrial automation.

The signal generator starts with a default base frequency of 50 kHz, and the internal hardware can be scaled up to 500 kHz when high-speed actuation is required. Communication and internal logic are powered through the E-bus, and the terminal draws a typical current of 280 mA from that backplane. The fast transistor driver on the output side can source or sink up to 1 A, allowing direct connection of optocouplers or small relays without an external amplifier. A supply range between the field terminals supports loads running at up to 24 V DC, while low-level devices can still operate from a minimum of 5 V DC. This operating range allows the output to maintain a stable duty cycle and consistent edge timing.

Maximum numeric precision is achieved with a resolution of 15-bit, letting the application controller address 32,768 discrete frequency steps. Fine tuning within that range is accomplished in increments as small as 10 mHz, so slow-running conveyors or dosing pumps can be synchronized without mechanical gear changes. The enclosure is rated IP20, which keeps the terminal contacts finger-safe in cabinet installations. With dimensions of 12 mm in width, 100 mm in height, and 68 mm in depth, the module fits dense EtherCAT stations where installation space is limited.
