The EL2124 digital output terminal is produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. As a CMOS-level output module, it connects field devices that require 5 V switching to an EtherCAT I/O node, translating controller commands into four independent logic signals for tasks such as driving indicators or actuating small relays. The terminal distributes low-power outputs directly from a DIN rail installation, reducing the need to route individual signal cables back to a centralized control cabinet. Its compact format also allows it to operate alongside other EtherCAT terminals within a modular I/O station.
Each channel delivers a nominal switching level of 5 VDC, matching standard TTL and CMOS logic while preventing excessive voltage from reaching sensitive loads. The driver stage can source or sink up to ±20 mA, so LEDs and optoisolator inputs can be driven without additional amplification. The CMOS output stage has minimal static power loss and provides clear high and low logic states. The module offers four individually addressable outputs that the EtherCAT master can update deterministically during each network cycle. This channel arrangement allows separate field devices to be controlled from one narrow terminal without combining their switching commands.
The housing provides IP20 protection, which guards against accidental contact with hazardous internal parts but requires an enclosure for protection from dust and moisture. Operation remains stable at a relative humidity of up to 95%, provided condensation does not occur. The terminal clips onto a 35 mm DIN mounting rail, allowing it to be installed beside compatible Beckhoff I/O modules in a control cabinet. Its electronic circuitry receives power exclusively through the E-Bus, eliminating the need for separate supply wiring to the terminal electronics. The outputs can control resistive loads or lamps, providing flexibility for low-current signaling and switching applications. A variable installation position permits the terminal to be mounted in any orientation while preserving access to its wiring points and status indicators.
