Product Description:
The EL2088 is a digital output terminal produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It fits into modular I/O stations where EtherCAT couplers distribute fieldbus communication along a DIN rail, allowing controllers to actuate solenoids, contactors, and pilot lights without centralized wiring. The terminal converts logical output bits from the EtherCAT process image into switched 24-volt lines. This conversion supports deterministic, cycle-synchronous operation in packaging equipment, material-handling systems, and general machinery panels.
The terminal provides 8 discrete channels that are mapped to the controller as eight output bits, so one byte operates all points with minimal bus overhead. Each channel switches up to 0.5 A, while the combined group current is limited to 3 A to protect upstream conductors. Loads operate from a nominal 24 VDC supply and are switched to the supply’s negative rail through 0 V switching. The terminal supports resistive, inductive, and lamp loads, and integrated suppression components handle the voltage generated when inductive loads are de-energized. Short-circuit and overload conditions are detected internally, and normal operation resumes automatically after the fault is cleared. The output circuitry is galvanically isolated from the logic domain. Status information is represented in the process image, allowing diagnostic data to reach the PLC or HMI.
The housing has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for installation inside a typical control cabinet. It snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail, and its housing profile permits a variable installation position to accommodate different cable-routing paths. Channel activity is indicated by 8 green LEDs, providing a clear local view of the output states during operation. Power for the internal circuitry is supplied via the E-bus, eliminating the need for separate logic-power wiring. The terminal’s automatic reset behavior reduces the need for manual intervention after a temporary output fault. Its compact format also allows multiple terminals to be installed together in a distributed EtherCAT I/O station without requiring centralized field wiring.
