The EL2008-0000 is a digital output terminal from Beckhoff that belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Within an automation cell, it acts as a switching interface between PLC logic and field-mounted actuators by presenting eight discrete channels on the EtherCAT I/O backplane. Installed beside other EL terminals, the module expands output capacity in a compact cabinet layout and keeps wiring organized without requiring a separate network node or additional interface hardware.

The terminal drives resistive, inductive, and lamp loads at a nominal output of 24 VDC. All eight outputs are addressed in a process image that occupies one byte, so the unit maps exactly 8 output bits to the controller and keeps signal assignment straightforward in the control program. Each channel sources up to 0.5 A, which suits small solenoids, relays, and indicator lamps when the connected load stays within the allowed range. Mechanical attachment uses a 35 mm DIN rail, and the housing carries an IP20 rating that limits installation to enclosed control cabinets. The outputs are non-reactive, so switching events do not feed energy back into upstream circuitry. One diagnostic LED per channel shows the current switching state, and the installation position can be chosen freely because the electronics are not gravity-sensitive.

Supply power reaches the logic side via the E-Bus, which eliminates separate wiring and keeps internal potentials referenced to the EtherCAT interface. For wiring errors, the module includes reverse polarity protection, so swapped conductors block current flow instead of damaging the electronics. The output stage is also short-circuit proof, allowing a channel to shut down quickly without harming the semiconductor driver. When an inductive load is opened, the internal energy absorber limits the released voltage by dissipating up to 150 mJ/channel, which reduces overvoltage stress on nearby devices and helps maintain stable operation during frequent switching.
