The EL1918-2200 is a safety input terminal built by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. As a modular I/O component, the device forwards field-level switch signals to the TwinSAFE system so that emergency stops, guard doors, and light curtains can be evaluated within the overall control architecture. It connects directly to the EtherCAT bus and contributes to decentralized machine safety by sampling discrete channels and transferring their state to a higher-level controller.

Its wiring side accepts 1-wire or 2-wire sensor connections, allowing ground-referenced or redundant line monitoring. The terminal offers 8 digital inputs that are galvanically tied to the power contacts. Each channel is energized from a 24 VDC control circuit, and the circuitry tolerates up to 36 VDC without damage during supply excursions. Power is routed through internal contacts rated for 10 A, so the upstream feed can loop through adjacent terminals. A process image of 7 bytes in and 6 bytes out is mapped to the EtherCAT master, enabling deterministic access to status bits and reset commands via the TwinSAFE/Safety over EtherCAT protocol.

Thermal self-protection activates at 110 °C; once this internal switch-off temperature is reached, the electronics disconnect to prevent false switching. For dielectric integrity, the input circuitry withstands 500 VDC between the field supply and the logic layer. The housing meets the IP20 protection rating, so it must be installed inside an enclosure where only limited dust ingress occurs. Mechanical dimensions are 12 x 100 x 68 mm, matching the standard Beckhoff 12 mm terminal width and supporting high channel density on DIN rails. The terminal does not include integrated TwinSAFE logic, so it relies on an external safety CPU for rule evaluation while the process image still supports time-stamped acknowledgment bits that minimize latency.
