The EL1899 digital input terminal is produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It is used in industrial automation to collect discrete sensor states and forward them to an EtherCAT controller through the internal fieldbus of a terminal block stack. By mapping each channel into the process image, the module allows PLC programs to monitor machine limits, push buttons, proximity switches, and similar devices without separate I/O wiring harnesses. This arrangement supports compact machine control systems in which multiple terminals share communication and power connections through the same modular assembly.
The terminal accepts a nominal control voltage of 24 VDC and offers 16 ground-referenced input channels. Each channel is debounced by a 10 µs filter that suppresses contact chatter before the state is reported. Signals are brought in through the compact 1-wire connection system, reducing conductor count when sensors share a common supply. Mechanical fastening to the cabinet is handled by a standard 35 mm DIN rail foot, so the module can sit beside power supplies, relays, or other Beckhoff terminals without adapters. Input energy and logic power are both derived from the power-contact feed, keeping the internal electronics supplied through adjacent terminals and eliminating separate power leads.
The housing is rated IP20, so it is intended for protected enclosures where finger-safe touch protection is sufficient. Its overall width is 12 mm, conserving rail space in high-density control panels. Screwless push-in clamps accept solid, stranded, or ferruled conductors, while direct insertion simplifies connections made with solid-core wire. The input circuits use ground switching, which means that connected sensors pull the signal line to ground against the shared control-voltage reference on the power contact. The installation position is variable, allowing the terminal orientation to suit different cabinet layouts. A power contact also serves as the input reference, helping maintain an orderly wiring arrangement across the terminal stack. During operation, the EtherCAT master receives the captured input states through the process image for use by the PLC program.
