The EL1862-0000 is a sixteen-channel digital input terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It transfers 24-volt DC field signals onto the EtherCAT bus so a controller can read discrete sensor states over high-speed communication instead of through parallel wiring. By concentrating multiple inputs and the bus coupler in one compact terminal, the module helps simplify distributed control cabinet layouts in industrial automation cells. Its format is well suited to machine sections where many switches or proximity sensors must be collected in a small amount of panel space.

Each channel operates from a nominal control level of 24 VDC, and all channels are sampled simultaneously so real-time logic remains synchronous. The terminal provides 16 digital inputs that map directly into one 16-bit process word, reducing network traffic compared with separate single-bit devices. Protection is limited to IP20, which is appropriate for installation inside a closed control cabinet. Internal electronics are powered over the EtherCAT backplane and draw 100 mA of E-bus current. The housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, allowing the terminal to be placed beside other I/O modules without requiring a separate mounting bracket. Simultaneous sampling also helps the controller recognize state changes across multiple channels without the timing skew that can occur with sequential scanning.

Front-end debouncing is handled by a 3 ms input filter that blocks contact chatter before data reaches the PLC. Field conductors terminate on a 2 × 10-pole male connector built to IEC 60603-13, and its 1/10 in pitch supports ribbon cable or individual leads without extra adapters. Channel activity is shown locally by 16 status LEDs, providing immediate visual confirmation of input state. The terminal may be mounted in any orientation, which gives flexibility in dense cabinets or remote I/O stations. During operation each input draws 3 mA, while the internal logic side requires 4 mA from the 24 V supply, helping keep thermal load low in tightly packed assemblies.
