Beckhoff manufactures the EL1502-0000, a compact EtherCAT counter module in the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for DIN-rail mounting alongside other fieldbus terminals, the device inserts into a machine I/O strand to capture fast digital signals and deliver deterministic data to the PLC. Its role in automation is to convert pulse streams from incremental encoders, flow sensors, or length gauges into position, speed, or quantity values that the controller can process in real time.

The module handles pulse trains up to 100 kHz, allowing acquisition of high-speed rotary feedback. Each channel stores values in a 32-bit counter, so extended runs can be tallied without rollover. When distributed clocks are enabled, latch events are timestamped with a synchronization accuracy of <100 ns, minimizing phase error between axes. Power for the logic is taken from the system E-bus, drawing a typical current of 130 mA. Signal inputs conform to EN 61131-2 Type 1 and therefore accept standard 24 V sensor outputs while sourcing only 5 mA per channel. Mechanical installation is straightforward because the housing clips onto a 35 mm mounting rail and shares a common potential with neighboring terminals through the grounding strip.

For field interaction, the terminal also provides two fast transistor outputs with a maximum switching current of 0.5 A per channel maximum; these outputs can be tied to marker lamps or small actuators that react directly to counter status. Eight spring-cage terminal points simplify wiring and help maintain contact reliability in vibrating equipment. The housing carries an ingress rating of IP20, indicating finger-safe construction suited for enclosed control cabinets. All electronics operate from a sensor supply of 24 VDC, and the module stores parameters non-volatilely through its NoCoE feature so settings persist after power is removed.
