Product Description:
The EL1258 digital input terminal is produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It is an eight-channel input module engineered for time-critical state detection on sensors and switches in industrial automation. By capturing nanosecond-accurate timestamps and forwarding them across the EtherCAT fieldbus, the terminal allows controllers to correlate events with the distributed system clock without extra wiring. The device mounts alongside other inline I/O slices so machine builders can scale channel counts without redesigning the carrier.
Each channel uses 2-wire connection technology and accepts 24 V sensor signals through optically isolated circuitry. The terminal provides 8 digital inputs that are sampled in synchronization with the EtherCAT Distributed Clocks feature, which is supported natively so no additional timing hardware is required. The logic electronics draw power through the E-bus, and the field-side circuits operate from a control cabinet supply of 24 VDC. Protective terminals and an enclosure rated to IP20 limit accidental contact with internal components. For sub-microsecond sequencing, the module delivers a timestamp resolution of 1 ns with a dedicated 32-bit timestamp for each edge. The internal logic also records both rising and falling transitions.
Event buffering is handled locally, and the terminal can queue 32 edges per input so transitions remain available when the bus is busy. The stored records reference a global system time with a width of 64 bits, aligning event data with high-precision motion and safety tasks. The slice snaps onto a 35 mm DIN mounting rail for straightforward installation alongside other EtherCAT terminals. It occupies only 12 mm of panel space, allowing dense I/O assemblies in compact enclosures. Its narrow housing helps preserve cabinet space while providing direct access to the channel connections. Local buffering also reduces the risk that closely spaced input events will be overlooked before the controller processes the associated data.
