EL1252 is a 2-channel Beckhoff EtherCAT input terminal. It has a compact housing with LED indicators for connected signals. Housing of the unit is made with industrial-grade polycarbonate. Height of the housing is 100 millimeters, its width is 12 millimeters, and its depth is 68 millimeters. The terminal is designed for mounting on a standard 35 millimeter DIN rail. Either solid conductors or flexible conductors with ferrules can be used for wiring digital inputs to the terminal. The connection spring is activated by a screwdriver. For solid conductors the wire size can range from AWG 28 to 14. For flexible conductors, the wire size can range from AWG 28 to 14. The ferrule size is AWG 26 to 16. Beckhoff recommends 8 to 9 millimeter wire stripping length.

Maximum load that the power contacts on the EL1252 terminal can handle is 10 Amps. Each of the digital inputs supports 4-wire connections. The nominal input voltage is 24 Volts DC with 15 to 20% allowed tolerance. Input voltages between -3 and +5 Volts are read in as a binary 0. Input voltages between +11 and +30 Volts are read in as a binary 1. The EL1252 terminal has a very fast input filter with a delay that is less than 1 microsecond, which is ideal for fast edge detection. This low delay is optimal for fast signals. Value of the input current is 3 milliamps. The resolution timestamp is 1 nanosecond and the timestamp precision is 10 nanoseconds plus the input delay. Providing input signals with timestamps allows tracing and correlation of signals with system-wide clocks. With this feature, parallel wiring for inputs or encoder signals is no longer required.
