The EL1124-0030 digital input terminal is manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It forms a compact I/O node that converts mechanical or electronic switch states into EtherCAT data so a central controller can monitor field devices in real time. Within an automation cabinet, the module sits beside other EL terminals and shares the internal supply and communication bus, offering a compact way to collect low-voltage sensor information on conveyors, assembly stations, and packaging lines. This arrangement keeps wiring localized and lets neighboring terminals pass signals and power through the backplane connection.

The terminal provides 4 inputs, each referenced to system ground through 2- or 3-wire connection technology. Logic circuitry operates from a nominal 5 V DC supply, and each channel draws only 50 µA typical, while the device itself adds a contact current of 14 mA plus load to the supply. Incoming edges pass through an input filter of 0.05 µs, making the module suitable for fast sensors. The input circuit recognizes a high level above 2.4 V and a low level below 0.8 V, which helps prevent false transitions in noisy environments. The resulting states occupy a process image width of 4 input bits that the EtherCAT master can read every cycle, and the internal electronics consume 90 mA from the E-bus without affecting the separate power contacts used for load supply.

Integration is straightforward because the housing snaps onto 35 mm DIN rail mounting and measures 12 × 100 × 68 mm, saving panel space. Its narrow width helps when several signal modules must fit within a limited cabinet row. The front power contacts can forward up to 10 A to downstream terminals, while the electronics remain protected by an IP20 rating for use in closed control cabinets. Distributed clocks are not supported, so the module relies on the standard EtherCAT cycle for timing, which is adequate for typical machine sequences where millisecond synchronization is sufficient.
