The EL1014 digital input terminal is produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It occupies a single 12 mm I/O slice and converts field-level switch signals into an EtherCAT process image for PLCs. Designed for decentralized control cabinets, it gathers on/off states from sensors and relays them to higher-level automation systems with minimal latency. The compact housing snaps onto a DIN rail beside other communication, analog, or power terminals, creating modular stations on assembly lines and material-handling equipment.

The terminal accepts a nominal control voltage of 24 VDC, aligning with common machine power buses. Each input draws only 3 mA, allowing dozens of proximity sensors or limit switches to share the same supply without overload. A built-in filter of 10 µs suppresses contact bounce while still registering the rapid state changes required by high-speed packaging machines. Field wiring follows the 3-wire convention of positive, negative, and signal conductors, making diagnostics with standard test tools straightforward. After conversion, the module maps the channel states into a compact segment of four input bits, keeping EtherCAT telegrams short and deterministic.

The module offers four isolated channels, allowing I/O density to be increased by adding more terminals along the rail. Control and auxiliary power reach the electronics via power contacts, so no extra feed wiring is required as the station grows. An enclosure rating of IP20 provides finger-safe protection inside cabinets but requires additional shielding where moisture or conductive dust is present. The terminal uses diagnostic LEDs and parameter objects that are consistent with neighboring terminals, simplifying configuration and status monitoring across a modular station.
