The CX9020-0100 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. This module functions as the central controller in distributed I/O stations, executing user programs and handling deterministic communication with drives and sensors on the DIN rail. By combining computation, fieldbus routing, and local data buffering in one compact housing, the unit conserves cabinet space while delivering IEC 61131-3 logic and visualization capabilities for industrial automation. Its integrated design supports machine control tasks without requiring separate computing and communication modules.
It is driven by a 1 GHz Arm Cortex-A8 processor that runs on a single core, providing deterministic cycle times without the overhead of multicore task scheduling. The CPU is paired with 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, providing space for code, variables, and operating system services. Two integrated Ethernet controllers terminate at two RJ45 connectors, and each interface supports 10/100 Mbit/s auto-negotiation. This arrangement allows one port to connect to an upstream switch while the second establishes a separate device network segment. The unit has four USB 2.0 sockets on the front for a keyboard, storage device, or service dongle, and each port is current-limited to 500 mA. For nonvolatile process data, the controller includes 128 kB of NOVRAM that retains information through power cycles. Two microSD slots provide removable mass storage for application files, recipes, and operating data.
The electronics draw power from a 24 V DC source, and internal regulation keeps typical power consumption at 5 W, helping reduce heat buildup inside the panel. The aluminum housing measures 84 × 100 × 91 mm and has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for enclosed control cabinets that provide clean, dry air. Heat dissipates passively through the housing side walls during operation. Up to 2 A can be forwarded through the system feed to power adjacent I/O slices. The compact dimensions allow the controller to mount on a DIN rail alongside Beckhoff Bus Terminals and other automation components.
