The CX9001-1102 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff in the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Intended for DIN-rail installation, it consolidates PLC logic, motion coordination, and fieldbus communication inside a single compact head station, letting machine builders reduce cabinet space and wiring. Deployed in production lines, the unit orchestrates distributed I/O slices, exchanges data with supervisory Ethernet layers, and executes deterministic TwinCAT tasks required for sequence control and basic positioning.
The hardware operates from a nominal 24 VDC supply, so it can share a low-voltage rail with sensors and actuators. An Intel IXP420, 266 MHz processor provides the computational core and combines ARM XScale execution with on-chip network acceleration. User variables reside in 128 MByte of SDRAM, while the operating system and project files are stored in a separate 32 MByte flash device that tolerates frequent power cycling. Dual RJ45 interfaces give two independent channels, and each port negotiates at 10/100 Mbit/s, allowing machine and plant traffic to be separated without an external switch. For IEC 61131-3 logic, the controller comes with the TwinCAT-CE-PLC runtime, and an additional TwinCAT-CE-NC-PTP license is available for single-axis motion. Local K-Bus terminals are refreshed through a 4 kByte dual-port RAM interface and may draw up to 2 A of field supply current from the backplane, keeping compact I/O clusters powered directly from the CPU module.
The unit includes one 1 × DVI-I, 29-pin connector for a small HMI panel. Nonvolatile process data can be buffered in 128 kByte of NOVRAM, safeguarding counters and recipes during controlled shutdowns. USB flash drives, scanners, or remote backup devices connect through 2 × USB 2.0 Type A ports without additional hubs. Thermal loading is minimal, and typical dissipation reaches only 6 W, easing cabinet ventilation requirements. The preinstalled Microsoft Windows CE kernel starts quickly after power returns.
