The CX9001-1001 is an embedded PC unit manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed as a compact control platform, it links terminal I/O with CPU resources so machine builders can deploy PLC logic, HMI tasks, and network communication in a single rail-mounted device. Within an automation line, the unit serves as the local controller that gathers field signals, processes them deterministically, and transmits results upstream to supervisory networks.

Internally, the controller relies on fanless convection to remove heat, eliminating moving parts that could introduce dust or vibration. Two independent Ethernet interfaces use 2 x RJ45 sockets bridged by an internal switch, and they support line or star topologies at 10/100 Mbit/s. Program code and system files are stored in 32 MByte of flash, while working memory is provided by 128 MByte of SDRAM, giving enough headroom for motion tasks, data logging, and HMI graphics. The I/O DPRAM size of 4 kByte buffers cyclic process images between the CPU and the attached K-Bus terminals, and a dielectric strength of 500 Vrms insulates the logic from external wiring. No DVI or USB ports are included, so visualization must be handled through network interfaces.

Mounting is simplified by a 30 mm DIN rail, allowing the PC to sit beside standard Beckhoff I/O slices. Power arrives from a 24 V DC supply and is further distributed to the field terminals with an I/O current of 2 A. For retentive data such as recipe values, 128 kByte of NOVRAM preserves information through power cycles. TwinCAT PLC Runtime is preinstalled under the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, so IEC 61131-3 programs can start automatically once the unit boots. The dedicated terminal bus, designated as K-Bus, maintains synchronized access to each slice and keeps process response deterministic when the controller is expanded with additional I/O modules.
