The CX9001-0001-1002 embedded controller is produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. This unit combines a compact PC platform with modular I/O terminals so it can run logic and communication tasks directly in a control cabinet. In factory automation, it replaces separate PLC hardware by executing user programs and forwarding field data to higher-level networks through onboard Ethernet.

Inside the aluminum housing, the Intel IXP420 XScale processor clocks at 533 MHz and works with 128 MByte of SDRAM for program execution and a persistent 32 MByte flash module for operating system and application storage. A separate 128 kByte NOVRAM section secures retentive variables against power loss, which helps preserve stored values during restarts. TwinCAT PLC Runtime is pre-installed, so user logic can start immediately after boot. Two RJ45 sockets form the integrated Ethernet interface, and each port supports data rates of 10/100 Mbit/s for simultaneous machine network traffic and service access. The controller accepts a single 24 V DC supply and has compact overall dimensions, allowing it to fit beside standard DIN-rail modules without requiring major cabinet changes.

Up to 64 digital or analog terminals can be mounted directly on the right side because the internal backplane uses the E-Bus, which carries process data and power to each slice. The embedded PC delivers an I/O supply current of 2 A, which is suitable for typical sensor groups without external feeders, while its own maximum power dissipation remains limited to 6.5 W to reduce heat buildup in tight enclosures. The device has an IP20 rating, so it must be installed in a closed control cabinet that protects it from incidental contact and larger solid objects. This layout keeps processing, communications, and terminal expansion together in a compact DIN-rail installation.
