Beckhoff’s CX9001-0001 is an Embedded PC from the CX Embedded PC Systems series designed to mount on standard DIN rail and serve as the central controller for small to medium-sized machines. By integrating an ARM-based CPU, nonvolatile storage, and fieldbus interfaces into one 19 mm wide housing, the unit replaces separate PLCs and gateway modules. Its compact format helps it fit tightly spaced control cabinets without sacrificing core control functions. In industrial automation, it executes IEC 61131-3 programs, interfaces with distributed I/O terminals, and forwards process data to supervisory Ethernet networks.

The controller is powered from a 24 VDC supply that also delivers up to 2 A for the attached E-bus terminals. Inside, 128 MByte of DDR RAM handles variable storage and buffering, while 32 MByte of flash retains the operating system and user project after shutdown. Network access is provided by two 10/100 Mbit channels presented on 2 x RJ45 connectors, and the internal switch allows line topology without external hardware. The lack of a DVI/USB interface keeps the front panel compact, while the TwinCAT-CE-PLC-Runtime is preinstalled to execute deterministic cyclic tasks. The E-bus terminal bus passes power and data along the I/O slices so that address allocation occurs automatically during startup.

The enclosure has an IP20 protection class, which is suitable for control cabinets with a controlled climate. A replaceable CR2032 battery maintains the real-time clock, and 128 kByte of NOVRAM records retentive process values without wear. The basic insulation withstands a 500 Vrms dielectric test between supply and signal circuits. With no moving media and an internal switch replacing external hubs, the device operates continuously with minimal service requirements. This layout also keeps the controller self-contained for installations that rely on compact Ethernet and terminal-bus integration.
