The CX8190 is an embedded DIN-rail computer produced by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed as a compact PLC platform, it combines an industrial CPU, onboard I/O interfaces, and real-time fieldbus communication to execute control logic directly inside machine cabinets. By integrating PC technology with Beckhoff’s E-bus or K-bus terminal blocks, the unit replaces traditional rack PLCs and supports deterministic automation tasks such as motion sequencing, data collection, and Ethernet-based supervisory exchange.

The device runs on an Arm Cortex-A9 CPU clocked at 800 MHz and uses a single processing core to minimize heat dissipation while maintaining deterministic scan times. Application code resides in the 512 MB microSD flash, whereas runtime variables are cached in 512 MB DDR3-RAM. A built-in Ethernet controller exposes a 1 x RJ45 Ethernet port that negotiates at 10/100 Mbit/s; through this interface, the controller handles Real-time Ethernet, ADS UDP/TCP, EAP, and Web Services without an external gateway. For buffered retain data, the system embeds a 1 MB UPS memory on the same card. When additional slices are needed, the right-hand E-bus or K-bus interface can deliver up to 10 W at 5 V, allowing mixed digital and analog terminals to draw the required field supply.

Power is supplied through a 24 V DC input, and the base unit draws 4 W during steady operation, increasing to 9 W when the internal UPS buffer is engaged. Up to 2 A can be sourced on the terminal rail, letting distributed sensors share the same supply. The aluminum housing measures 71 x 100 x 73 mm, holds an IP20 protection rating, and weighs 230 g, so it occupies minimal space in densely packed control panels. Even when the full 10 W E-bus budget is allocated to extension modules, the fanless design keeps the thermal envelope within limits for 0…55 °C cabinet temperatures.
