The CX8180 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for DIN-rail mounting inside control panels, the unit provides deterministic control, communication, and data handling for distributed I/O stations. It bridges field wiring to higher-level Ethernet networks, executes IEC 61131-3 PLC code, and supplies auxiliary power to inline terminals, making it a compact controller for motion, process, and building automation tasks.
The device is powered by an 800 MHz Arm Cortex-A9 processor that operates on a single core and accesses 512 MB DDR3 RAM for program execution and variable storage. A 10/100 BASE-T interface offers deterministic network cycles at up to 10/100 Mbit/s, and a galvanically isolated supply of 24 V DC keeps the control electronics separated from field voltages. Even when fully loaded, the system draws only 4 W, which reduces cabinet heat and allows passive convection cooling. Additional connections include one RS-232 port and one RS-485 port for legacy sensors, power contacts that can carry 10 A to downstream terminals, and a separate 2 A I/O supply line for digital modules. The electrical clearance withstands 500 V of dielectric stress. The built-in uninterruptible power supply retains 1 MB of data for one second during voltage dips, helping protect stored information from an abrupt loss of input power.
User files and the operating system are stored on a 512 MB microSD card that can be replaced from the front panel. The housing measures 71 × 100 × 73 mm, fits between standard terminal blocks, and carries an IP20 rating suitable for installation in closed control cabinets. At only 230 g, the controller adds minimal mass to rail assemblies while leaving room for additional I/O modules. Passive ventilation is sufficient because the enclosure lacks moving parts, reducing mechanical wear during continuous operation. All connectors remain within the molded shell, helping maintain an orderly installation while protecting internal components against accidental contact with solid objects larger than the enclosure rating permits.
