Product Description:
The CX Embedded PC Systems series from Beckhoff includes DIN-rail controllers intended for decentralized control architectures. Within this lineup, the CX8091 is a small embedded PC that executes IEC 61131-3 logic, forwards process data to higher-level networks, and powers the local terminal segment through its internal 10 W E-bus/K-bus supply. By integrating a one-second UPS, it can finish critical write cycles during brief voltage dips, making it suitable for machines, HVAC zones, and other automated stations that require deterministic behavior without the footprint of a panel-mounted industrial PC.
Computation is handled by an Arm9, 400 MHz processor that provides enough cycle-time headroom for medium-sized control tasks while keeping heat dissipation low. Program variables are held in 64 MB of RAM, and recipe files or application images reside on a removable 512 MB microSD card, simplifying data transfer. The electronics are powered from a single 24 VDC (-15%/+20%) source; under full load, the device draws only 3 W, which eases cabinet power budgeting and reduces UPS sizing. Dielectric strength is rated at 500 V between the power supply and Ethernet interfaces, isolating low-voltage logic from external wiring faults. The BACnet stack and OPC UA server operate concurrently with the TwinCAT runtime, allowing the controller to deliver standardized object models to building-management clients. It can also support deterministic PLC data exchanges over EtherCAT.
A compact housing measuring 64 mm × 100 mm × 73 mm fits beside I/O slices without blocking ventilation slots, and the front panel has an IP20 protection rating to prevent accidental contact with energized internal parts. At 180 g, the unit adds little mass to top-hat rail assemblies, helping maintain vibration limits on moving machines. Dual-purpose Ethernet ports provide BACnet/IP and OPC UA services after startup, allowing supervisory systems to discover the node and read live values without additional gateway hardware.
