The CX8090 is an embedded PC manufactured by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Designed for DIN-rail mounting next to modular I/O terminals, this unit serves as a compact PLC and gateway. It executes user programs while forwarding real-time data between attached K-bus or EtherCAT modules and an Ethernet backbone used by higher-level automation systems.

At its core, an ARM9 CPU clocked at 400 MHz runs the real-time operating system and PLC task scheduler. Execution data reside in 64 MB of RAM, while application code and retained variables are stored on a 512 MB microSD card that plugs into the housing. The single Ethernet port is the designated fieldbus interface, permitting Modbus TCP, ADS, or standard TCP/IP communication. Local expansion attaches through either a K-bus or E-bus terminal interface, and the controller can exchange up to 2 kB of input data and 2 kB of output data per cycle with K-bus slices. A one-second integrated UPS copies 1 MB of volatile process information to flash during a power loss, preventing data loss. The electronics draw power from a 24 VDC supply and require only 3 W at full load, so cabinet heat rise is minimal. Up to 2 A is routed internally to power the attached I/O terminals.

The housing measures 64 × 100 × 73 mm and weighs 180 g, allowing high-density installation when multiple controllers share a panel. A dielectric strength of 500 V separates the low-voltage circuitry from the fieldbus shield, supporting reliable operation in mixed-potential systems. Continuous service is permitted from 0 °C to +55 °C, and convection cooling is sufficient because of the unit’s low thermal load. The enclosure carries an IP20 protection rating, so it is intended for placement inside a closed control cabinet that excludes dust and dripping liquids.
