Product Description:

The CX8080 is an embedded PC controller developed by Beckhoff within the CX Embedded PC Systems series. Intended for DIN-rail installation, the unit combines PLC logic, fieldbus gateway functions, and localized I/O control so a compact assembly line or building service can run deterministic programs without an external computer. It communicates with Beckhoff K-bus or E-bus terminals, allowing direct attachment of digital and analog modules at the same mounting plane. By hosting the control task in the controller, network traffic and cabinet space are reduced in small-scale automation projects.

At the hardware level, the CX8080 runs on a 400 MHz Arm9 processor that executes IEC 61131-3 code held in 64 MB RAM. Program files, boot data, and user archives are stored on a removable 512 MB microSD card. An integrated Ethernet controller exposes one RJ45 port that supports 10/100 Mbit/s communication for engineering access or Modbus TCP coupling. Additional field connectivity is provided by a D-sub port that can be configured as RS232 or RS485, along with a USB device interface for service functions such as serial-over-USB tunneling. The terminal strip on the side can switch automatically between Beckhoff K-bus and EtherCAT-based E-bus, allowing reuse of existing racks without rewiring.

The controller is designed for a nominal supply of 24 VDC and draws a maximum of 3 W. A separate 2 A feed powers the attached terminal rail so high-density modules do not overload the CPU segment. Internal circuitry withstands 500 V dielectric strength between supply and logic domains, and an integrated capacitor bank offers a 1 s UPS buffer to ride through brief brownouts. The plastic housing carries an IP20 rating and measures 64 x 100 x 73 mm, dimensions that permit fanless mounting inside shallow control panels with 55 mm spacing between adjacent devices.
